MacGyver Resuscitation

Resuscitationists have always needed to MacGyver solutions. Whether it’s creating a SALAD manikin that can actually vomit or tubing the goose in the era BDC (Before DuCanto Catheter), there has always been an identity around figuring things out while pushing the standard of care forward. Innovation often begins in these moments; the gritty, creative, hands-on problem solving that marks our field.

Progress usually starts with a gap. Through trial and error, a solution begins to take shape.

In the early stages, this way of working is exactly what drives breakthroughs. Over time, though, sustaining a system that relies on duct tape and gum becomes difficult. What once felt resourceful eventually becomes the very thing that limits growth. The quick fixes that got us here need to evolve into 2×4s and nails.

At The Resus Tailor, we believe in building a firm foundation by integrating human factors and workflow into every element of layout and equipment. Reliable peak performance requires more than clever improvisation; it requires intentional design that stands up under pressure.

Duct tape and gum are often a necessary beginning. The next stage involves standardizing and consistently delivering that same level of performance in every environment, with every crew, under any conditions. This is where we move from strategy to logistics. This is where something novel becomes something expert. As a field, resuscitationists turn the next wave of adopters into experts when the system supports it.

This shift is not always simple. Logistics demand attention to the details, the small pieces that stay invisible until they fail. Bag architecture, cart layouts, equipment placement, and workflow design can support performance or they can work against it. When we design those elements well, we move the entire field forward.

The next stage for our profession lies in building systems that carry our ethos of innovation into a future defined by readiness, reliability, and excellence. Our creativity got us started. Thoughtful design will take us the rest of the way.
